Yet there is one group of individuals whose insurance needs the government is paying attention to and those are the needs of the minor children, those under the age of 18 who are in need of health insurance. This group has several alternatives as a means of getting health insurance through the government.
Children who are afflicted with birth defects and health issues early on are covered by Medicare. Although, mostly thought of as insurance for the elderly there are benefits for handicapped individuals included in this plan.
Medicaid is another health programs run by the government to cover low-income families who can not afford health insurance and living below the poverty line for children. The family income is very low, to meet the standards for Medicaid but who can be covered through this program for children with certain exceptions, if they are severely ill or if they become slightly liberation. All other children can only be approved, they live below the poverty line.
A more recent addition to children’s health plans by the government includes a program called SCHIP which is a plan that is designed to cover health benefits for families that make more money then would be allowed on Medicare but those families that are still struggling to get by. This program is designed as a safety net to catch those families that still can’t afford health insurance but are trying to get by. This plan goes under different names from state to state but more information about the plan can be attained by contacting your local Medicaid office. And this is the type of program that works on a sliding scale so if you make a little bit more money then you may be asked to pay a very minimal premium for this health insurance plan but the cost is well below that of any other health insurance plan and covers most of the needs of children at no out of pocket cost to you.
